How to Find Lost or Unclaimed Superannuation in Australia
Billions of dollars in Australian super sits unclaimed. Here's how to check if any of it is yours — or a family member's — and how to make sure it doesn't happen to your own estate.
According to the Australian Taxation Office, the total amount of lost (fund-held) and ATO-held super reached just over $18.9 billion across just under 7.3 million accounts as of 30 June 2025. It happens for ordinary reasons: changing jobs, moving house, or simply losing track of an old account from years ago.
How to check if you have lost super
The ATO makes this straightforward and free — you never need to pay anyone to find or claim your own super:
- Log into myGov and link it to the ATO, then check the "Super" section, which shows any accounts held by funds or the ATO itself
- Use the ATO app, which shows the same information
- Call the ATO's lost super search line directly
- Download and post a paper form if you'd rather not do it online
Why this matters for digital estate planning
Lost super doesn't just happen to living people who've lost track of an old account — it also happens after death, when an executor doesn't know every super fund the person ever held. Unlike a single default fund, many Australians accumulate several small accounts across different jobs over a lifetime, and not all of them make it into a will's list of assets.
Including a full list of super funds — current and historical — in your digital estate inventory means your executor isn't left trying to reconstruct your work history to track them all down.
Consolidating your own super now
If you find lost super in your own name, you can generally consolidate it into your active fund directly through myGov. Beyond simplifying your own finances, this also reduces the number of accounts your executor will eventually need to deal with — one clear active fund is far easier to administer than several forgotten ones.
The Digital Estate Kit's inventory includes a dedicated section for superannuation and financial accounts, so every fund you've ever held is recorded in one place — not left for your executor to discover.
